Setting Boundaries: A Mother’s Decision to Protect Her Infant From Secondhand Smoke

Joyful but stressful is welcoming a newborn. Fearing thirdhand smoke for her baby, a mother-in-law was concerned about her smoking. The mom was worried by the smell on her clothes even though the mother-in-law avoided smoking close to the infant.

The health of children is at danger from thirdhand smoke since it contains nicotine and residues that stay indoors after smoking. To reduce the risk, the mother-in-law was asked to take a shower and change clothing before handling the infant.

On visits, it might be difficult to strike a balance between friendliness and boundaries. The column on care and feeding recommended expressing preferences; it was her obligation to do so.
